Baptism Inquiry Form

What to Expect in the Baptism Service

Baptism is a communal act of faith. During the service, you will be asked a series of vows that reflect your desire (or your child’s) to grow in grace, follow the way of Jesus, and participate in the life of the church. If the baptism is for a child, you will make promises on their behalf until they are able to claim their faith for themselves. Sponsors or godparents may also stand with you to embody the wider circle of love and support.

The congregation will make vows as well—promising to surround you or your child with grace, encouragement, and a nurturing community. Because these vows are communal, baptisms happen in the presence of the gathered people of God, who join their voices and prayers as we welcome a new member into Christ’s family.

On the day of the baptism, Pastor Stephanie will guide you through each part of the liturgy. There is no need to memorize anything. You will simply be invited to come forward, share in the baptismal waters, and receive a blessing. Photographs are welcome within our guidelines for maintaining a respectful worship environment.

This moment is a celebration of God’s love and a reminder that none of us walk the journey of faith alone. We are grateful to share it with you.
Baptism is a sacred moment in the life of our church, marking God’s grace at work in us and welcoming each person—child, youth, or adult—into the shared life of faith. In the United Methodist tradition, baptism is a once-in-a-lifetime gift that celebrates God’s love, our belonging in the community of Christ, and our commitment to grow in faith together.

At Highlands UMC, baptisms are ordinarily celebrated during Sunday morning worship, so the whole congregation can participate in the vows of welcome and support. In very special circumstances, such as illness or disability, a separate service may be arranged in conversation with Pastor Stephanie.

You do not need to be a member of Highlands UMC to be baptized here. We simply ask that those seeking baptism—either for themselves or for a child—intend to participate in the life of the church in some meaningful way, whether regularly in person, online, or as part of our extended community.

This form helps us learn more about you, schedule your baptism, and prepare for a service that honors your story and reflects the welcome of Christ. After submitting the form, Pastor Stephanie will follow up to confirm details and offer a time for conversation and preparation.
